Periodontal treatment is treatment to the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. However periodontal disease or gum disease is a totally preventable condition. The most important way to prevent gum disease is to maintain a high level of oral hygiene and keep your teeth clean.
To achieve a good level of oral hygiene it is recommended that regular toothbrushing is carried out twice a day once in the morning and once at night. Toothbrushing should take around 2 to 3 minutes per day using a good quality fluoride containing toothpaste. We also recommend that patients floss their teeth on a regular basis and visit us at Langley Dental Practice as per our recommendations. We encourage our patients who smoke to try and give up smoking and also be aware of their alcohol intake.
The normal types of periodontal treatment that we undertake at Langley Dental Practice include scaling and polishing of the teeth and also root surface debridement under local anaesthetic.
A scale and polish attempts to remove the plaque and hard calculus also known as tartar from around your teeth using an instrument called a scaler. The frequency and interval of how often you have a scale and polish will be decided in conjunction with your dentist.
Root surface debridement is a procedure where deep cleaning of the gums well under the gum line is carried out usually under a local anaesthetic. This is sometimes done in conjunction with antibiotic therapy.
